At UNT, graduate students use multiple funding sources to support their education, including employment-based opportunities and competitive awards. Funding options may include assistantships, scholarships, travel awards and stipends, with some opportunities offering additional benefits such as health coverage or tuition waivers.

Graduate students are encouraged to explore funding options within their academic department, across the university and through external sources to maximize financial support.

Assistantships, Scholarships & Awards

Assistantships are available on a limited basis in most graduate programs. These positions provide funds for many master’s and doctoral students. Each department or program has its own requirements and expectations for their assistants and fellows. Most require 20 hours of work per week and many assistantship positions include health insurance eligibility. To inquire about or to apply for assistantships, contact your department or your academic graduate advisor.

Extramural Funding

External funding and nationally competitive scholarships can support your educational costs. UNT’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships provides students with resources and information regarding searching for external scholarships. UNT’s Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships and Research and Innovation's Funding Your Research guide graduate students in identifying and pursuing externally funded research and study opportunities.
