Do plants hold the keys to replenishing the world’s resources and fighting disease? UNT is quickly becoming the place for plant science research, thanks to our growing team of plant science experts who are studying plant cells to find solutions for energy, agriculture, nutrition and medicine.

Eco-friendly
UNT’s green research started with water quality studies in the 1930s. Today, with recognized leadership in sustainability, biobased products and green technology development, we are showing the many ways We Mean Green. UNT offers 118 sustainability-related courses, and 81 faculty conduct sustainability-related research.

Research Excellence

UNT’s four Institutes of Research Excellence bring solutions-based interdisciplinary research to industry and the marketplace.

Advanced Environmental Research Institute (AERI): Conducts research in a wide array of areas related to local, regional, national and international environmental problems.
Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes Institute (AMMPI): Designs high-performance materials for the aerospace, automotive and energy sectors.
BioDiscovery Institute (BDI): Uses plants, forest products and other biomass for production of biopolymers, new biobased materials for construction and transportation, biofuels and bioactive small molecules with applications in agriculture and health care.
Jim McNatt Institute for Logistics Research (JMI): Focuses on business logistics, economics, information technology, transportation and operations research solutions for public and private organizations.

Engineering Breakthroughs

With world-class programs, UNT’s fast-growing College of Engineering is establishing itself as a pacesetter in developing energy-efficient materials, renewable products and technologies, and next-generation applications and materials. Our researchers in materials science are improving the design and performance of new and existing biological and man-made materials. And our mechanical and energy engineering researchers are addressing global demand for cheap, renewable energy and eco-friendly products.
