UNT's Denton and Frisco Campuses will close tonight (Friday, Jan. 23) at 9 p.m. and remain closed until 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26. A winter storm is expected to bring freezing ice and snow that will deteriorate road conditions and make travel hazardous. UNT will send an Eagle Alert Sunday evening with information about Monday’s opening. Please take a moment to review UNT System policy 02.2000 Closures for Severe Weather and these important guidelines so you are prepared for all possibilities:

Essential Services

Essential services, including police, facilities, housing and dining, will continue to serve campus residents.

Dining Services

UNT Dining Services will remain open but with modified locations and hours to serve those on campus. For the latest updates on locations and hours, please visit https://dining.unt.edu/hours.

Transportation Services

Night Flight, which typically runs 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., will also be canceled today (Friday, Jan. 23), Saturday and Sunday. DCTA, which provides bus service on campus and in Denton, is also expecting to reduce or cancel services. Events
All university and campus events have been canceled for Saturday, January 24, and Sunday, January 25. Please check the UNT Athletics website or X for updates. For special events, we encourage you to please check with event organizers for updates.
Emergency Medical Needs
If you have a medical emergency, dial 911 or go to one of the local emergency rooms for care.
Police Department
The UNT Police Department remains operational for those who remain on campus during inclement weather. The department operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For life-threatening emergencies, please call or text 9-1-1. The non-emergency number is 940-565-3000.

Staff Preparations

Full Time Staff

If you are a staff member with the capability to work from home and are scheduled to work, please plan to do so. If you are unable to work remotely, please contact your supervisor.

  • If your position is one that can work remotely, plan ahead by taking your laptop and any necessary materials home with you.
  • Staff who have been issued a university laptop are equipped to work remotely, even without an approved flexible work arrangement.
  • If personal circumstances prevent remote work (e.g., child care, power outage or missing equipment), use accrued leave. If no leave is available, time will be docked as usual.
Emergency Leave

Employees whose jobs cannot be performed remotely and who have not been issued a laptop should enter Leave-Weather Closure-EMG for scheduled hours.

Hourly Employees

Hourly staff, including student employees, are not eligible for emergency leave and will only be paid for hours worked.

Monitoring and Decisions

  • UNT’s Inclement Weather Assessment Team monitors conditions when winter storms are forecasted.
  • Campus closure or delayed start decisions will be announced via Eagle Alert, so make sure your contact information is up to date. Students, update yours at my.unt.edu, and faculty and staff, update yours at my.untsystem.edu.
