Dear UNT community,
I am proud to announce that Clay Simmons will join our UNT family on Aug. 1 as the new chief compliance officer and director of institutional compliance.
Clay comes to us from Oregon State University where he has led the compliance operation since 2014. He brings with him a distinguished career of leadership and extensive knowledge that will help our university move forward with an effective compliance strategy.
UNT's compliance program addresses regulatory requirements governing the university, and Clay will be responsible for partnering with compliance professionals across the campus. He will develop seamless relationships with the compliance areas related to research and grant activities, finance, athletics, student affairs, professional services, and other highly regulated and institutionally defined areas of risk. UNT's chief compliance officer also works closely with the UNT System and will ensure a seamless integration of the university with its partner institutions.
While at Oregon State University, Clay designed and implemented the university-wide compliance and ethics program, created and directed the policy management process and reorganized the Title IX, Tile VI, ADA and Affirmative Action compliance structure within the office of equal opportunity and access. Prior to joining Oregon State University, he was the deputy director for university compliance services at the University of Texas at Austin for six years, a management advisor in the university risk and compliance office at Texas A&M University for three years, and worked in various compliance-related roles in components of the Texas A&M University System.
Clay holds a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M, a J.D. degree from the University of Texas School of Law and an M.B.A. from the Lowry Mays Graduate School of Business at Texas A&M University.
I am excited about the leadership, experience and vision that Clay will bring to UNT's compliance program and look forward to working with him as part of UNT's executive team.
Please join me in welcoming Clay to our community when you meet him.
UNT proud,
Neal Smatresk
President
