Dear UNT Faculty and Staff,
Many of you have earned a UNT degree with assistance from the UNT Employee Tuition Benefit, which covers designated tuition, differential tuition, and mandatory fees for eligible UNT employees. By investing in yourself through education, you've diversified skills, achieved goals, and opened the door to career advancement. You've also shared benefits with dependents, providing your closest loved ones with access to 244 programs of study at a supportive, Tier One research university where we help every student thrive.
The UNT Employee Tuition Benefit (previously called the Faculty/Staff/Retiree/Dependent Educational Scholarship) is more than a valuable perk of working at UNT — it's a crown jewel of our benefits package and unmatched by most other state institutions. UNT's investment in you and your family pays dividends for the university, and the Cabinet is committed to retaining it long term.
To ensure the Employee Tuition Benefit is administered in compliance with IRS guidelines, two changes surrounding graduate benefits will be implemented beginning with the Summer 2022 term.
- Payroll taxes will apply for UNT employees completing graduate coursework who receive benefits exceeding $5,250 each tax year.
- Employees who extend benefits to dependents for graduate coursework will be taxed through payroll for all graduate dependent benefits received.

We are happy to announce there are no changes to the tuition benefit program for undergraduate students, which accounts for 60 percent of the program's use.
The UNT Employee Tuition Benefit offers you and your family prime opportunities for development and career progression. Whether you seek to advance in your current field or desire a new venture, the tuition benefit program makes it possible for you to learn from world-class scholars, participate in meaningful research, and gain valuable hands-on experience.
We're living in the midst of an ever-changing marketplace, and I encourage you to take advantage of the Employee Tuition Benefit. It's a great opportunity for you and your family members to sharpen skills and earn a UNT degree.
UNT Proud,
Neal Smatresk
UNT President
