Dear UNT Faculty and Staff,
After 10 incredibly rewarding years of service, I write to inform you of my decision to resign as president of the University of
North Texas, effective Aug. 1, 2024. I have not made this decision lightly, but it
is time for me to embark on a new chapter in my life, and I feel secure doing so because
I know that this institution is in the capable hands of our dedicated teams across
campus. It has been a privilege to serve this community, and I cannot overstate my
thanks to all those whose belief in UNT has helped us soar higher.
Reflecting on the past decade, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the remarkable
journey we have undertaken together. Serving you as president has been the highlight
of my career. When I first took on this role, I knew we had the potential to achieve
great things, and because of your dedication, passion, and hard work, we have flourished
in ways that are nothing short of remarkable. Our collective efforts and shared vision
have propelled UNT to become the third-largest university in Texas, and our national
reputation has risen meteorically. I am proud to see our institution recognized and
respected across the nation for its excellence in education, research, and creativity.
What truly sets UNT apart is our caring nature and the support that we extend to our
students. Our commitment to nurturing the potential of every student is at the heart
of this institution. Together, we have created an environment where students not only
receive a world-class education but also experience the warmth, encouragement, and
mentorship that defines our community.
I want to express my deepest appreciation to all of you for your tireless efforts
in making UNT a place where dreams are realized, where innovation thrives, and where
the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds. It has been an honor to serve alongside
such a talented and dedicated community.
Transitions can be unsettling, but I am dedicated to supporting a successful presidential
search and smooth transition to ensure that our community feels engaged and confident
in our future progress as one of the preeminent universities in the nation.
Please know I am grateful for your unwavering support and contributions to UNT. I
look forward to staying connected with this incredible community as an ardent supporter
and advocate for years to come.
I will forever remain UNT Proud.
Neal Smatresk
