The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Spanish at UNT prepares students for literary and cultural analysis as well as linguistics. This Master's can serve as a terminal degree for those wishing to teach at the secondary, community college, and university levels. Spanish Master's Highlights

UNT professors of Spanish have specializations in all of the main areas of Latin American and Spanish literature, and students may choose from a variety of classes during their course of study.
All professors publish articles and/or books in their fields of specialization, and remain active by presenting at local, national, and international professional conferences.
Get to know other Spanish majors through student organizations like UNT Sigma Delta Pi - Alpha Pi Chapter (National Collegiate Hispanic Honors Society), Spanish Club, Mate Club and Folxlórico.
The Language Lab is an integral part of the Department of Spanish, offering support through the use of modern technology including computer software programs for self study and assignments, internet access, multi-language audio and video media, presentation equipment and numerous other techniques and materials.

Spanish Master's Courses You Could Take

Golden Age Spanish Novel (3 hrs)
Designed to acquaint students with the most important Spanish novels of the golden age period. Novels include La CelestinaEl LazarilloEl Abencerraje y la Hermosa JarifaNovelas Ejemplares, and La Diana.
Post-Franco Spanish Novel (3 hrs)
Main authors, works and styles of the post-Franco Spanish novel in their socio-historical and political context, carried out under an analytical and critical perspective.
Spanish Linguistics (3 hrs)
Survey of the modern linguistic analysis and fundamentals of the phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of contemporary Spanish. Students explore various aspects of Spanish linguistics as well as the structure and the sound system of Spanish.
Latin American Romanticism and Realism (3 hrs)
General overview of romantic and realist/naturalist novels in 19th-century Latin America with an emphasis on the efforts to establish political and cultural systems for the newly independent nations, the resistance to dictatorship, and the conflicts between races, genders and social classes. Readings include Echeverría, Sarmiento, Hernández, Isaacs, Cambaceres and Matto de Turner. Nationalist, postcolonial and feminist theories are introduced as major methodological approaches to analyze the novels.
Latin American Essay (3 hrs)
Examines the evolution of the essay genre in Latin American literature from the early 19th century to the late 20th century.
Contemporary Latin American Theater (3 hrs)
Deepens knowledge of the socio-historical and aesthetic contexts of major works in contemporary Latin American theatre. Taught in Spanish with secondary readings in Spanish and English.
