Graduates of UNT's master's program of rehabilitation counseling help individuals with disabilities find employment, feel empowered to live a productive life and undergo challenging transitions with guided support. By utilizing knowledge of vocational rehabilitation counseling, individual counseling, assessment, and group counseling our students are well equipped to provide support in various professional capacities. Offered with an option to complete courses entirely online, this master's program is accessible for individuals with disabilities and current rehabilitation workers seeking to enhance their education and skills. Opportunities for hands-on experience are also available through the department’s Wellness and Employment Lab (UNTWELL).

Why Earn a Rehabilitation Counseling Master's?

The Department of Rehabilitation and Health Services master’s program offers a traditional on-campus program as well as a distance-learning online program for professionals actively involved in the field.

Beyond the classroom, students participate in field-site internship experiences and engage in curriculum that emphasizes an exposure to a broad spectrum of rehabilitation services, professional organizations, interdisciplinary professional activities, and advocacy and consumer groups in the field of rehabilitation. Students are required to achieve 100 hours of practicum and 600 hours of an internship.

As a student, you will gain communication and goal-setting skills for the counseling process, and also learn how to utilize self-advocacy, psychological, vocational, social and behavioral interventions. Students are immersed into a curriculum combining academic theory and technique courses with hands-on practical experience.

Rehabilitation Counseling Master's Highlights

This program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) thereby allowing graduates to pursue counseling licensure in multiple states.
Courses are offered online or in campus-based formats to accommodate the needs of students entering the field of rehabilitation counseling as well as those who are currently employed in agencies serving individuals with disabilities.
Upon graduation, you’re also eligible for national certification as a rehabilitation counselor (CRC) and state licensure as a professional counselor (LPC).
Our department is comprised of community-engaged academics providing an education that reaches beyond the classroom.
Opportunities for hands-on experiences are also available through the department’s Wellness and Employment Lab (UNTWELL).
Individuals wishing to pursue a career in vocational rehabilitation after graduation may be eligible for funding through the Rehabilitation Services Grant (RSA).

Career Outlook

Alumni of our rehabilitation counseling program may be seen building bridges to recovery and sustainable life in community rehabilitation centers, vocational rehabilitation agencies, Veterans Affairs offices, schools or in addiction clinics, building a bridge to recovery and a sustainable life. Graduates are eligible for national certification as a rehabilitation counselor (CRC) and state licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) in multiple states.

Rehabilitation Counseling Master's Courses You Could Take

Multicultural Rehabilitation Counseling Practice (3 hrs)
Exploration of ethnic and cultural factors influencing the planning and delivery of rehabilitation counseling and related services. Includes examination of the intersection of disability with various racial/ethnic groups and other identities along with ways to work with complex diverse populations. ​This course is offered on-line and will require various synchronous meetings online during the semester.
Disability Issues in Human Development (3 hrs)
Covers the effects of disability, chronic illness and addiction on the process of human growth and personality development across the lifespan. Focuses on rehabilitation counseling issues related to physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, sexual and moral/spiritual development in persons with disabilities and their families.
Rehabilitation Counseling Theories (3 hrs)
Includes the study of major counseling theories and modalities with focus on principles and approaches relevant to rehabilitation counseling and supervision. Covers applications required in counseling people with physical, cognitive or emotional disabilities.
Rehabilitation Counseling Applications (3 hrs)
Includes the study and application of the counseling process, strategies and techniques used by rehabilitation counselors. Students develop generic counseling skills applicable to work across a spectrum of rehabilitation counseling settings.
Advanced Counseling Techniques in Rehabilitation Counseling (3 hrs)
Students learn and practice advanced counseling skills involving techniques and strategies associated with major counseling theories. Emphasis is on skill development, case conceptualization and self-awareness.
Ethical and Professional Foundations in Rehabilitation Counseling (3 hrs)
Introduction to rehabilitation counseling with an emphasis on ethics and professional issues. Study includes the philosophical legislative, ethical and organizational foundations. Reviews rehabilitation practices, professional issues, ethics and a broad overview of the context in which rehabilitation occurs.
