Music Education Ph.D. Highlights
Throughout the degree plan, you'll have multiple opportunities to develop teaching
skills at the college level. Ph.D. students assist professors teaching undergraduate
courses for Music Education majors and undergraduate music courses for non-music majors.
Ph.D. students can take advantage of teaching opportunities in the Early Childhood
Music Program (ages 0-5), the Start Up the Band program (ages 10-12), the Adopt a
Singer program (ages 11-14) and the New Horizons Senior Band (ages 50+).
Faculty members have also published many articles in peer-reviewed journals, written
or contributed to textbooks and presented at regional, national and international
conferences.
The College of Music is one of the nation's most comprehensive music schools and is
recognized internationally for its artistic and academic excellence. Its facilities
include more than 300 practice rooms, seven performance halls, numerous classrooms,
rehearsal rooms and computer labs.
Each month, Ph.D. students meet with faculty members to discuss special topics related
to career preparation. Through interaction with peers at various stages of degree
completion, you can prepare for research presentations at local, state and national
conferences.

Music Education Ph.D. Courses You Could Take
Qualitative Research in Music (3 hrs)
Provides the knowledge and skills necessary for conducting naturalistic research in
music settings, and focuses on design, sampling, observation, interviewing, analysis,
interpretation and reporting. Includes the concepts and procedures related to case
studies, ethnographies, grounded theory and other forms of qualitative inquiry.
Music Supervision (3 hrs)
Organization and duties; improving instruction; demonstration teaching; public department
curricula. Supervisor’s relation to community; ethics.
History of Music Education in the United States (3 hrs)
From 1620 to present; leading personalities, indigenous and black music, musical trends
and concepts in music education.
Principles of Music Learning (3 hrs)
Principles of music learning with specific attention to the process of learning musical
skills and concepts. Included are the application of such learning theories as behaviorism
and developmentalism to music, and such specific musical learning theories as those
of Gordon, Orff, Kodaly and Suzuki.
Sociology of Music (3 hrs)
Interrelationship of music and society in the United States. Current uses of music;
musical professions; economic aspects of music; research in the sociology of music.
Systematic Measurement of Music Behaviors (3 hrs)
Measurement with specific applications to the field of music, including music achievement,
attitude preference, aptitude, perception, interaction, and music teacher behavior
and effectiveness. Principles of measure creation, administration and analysis.
