The LGBTQ program is dedicated to UNT's mission of advancing educational excellence
and by preparing students to become thoughtful, engaged citizens of the world. The
minor provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary examination of the diversity of
global gender and sexual identities, communities, practices, and politics.

Courses explore Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + identified (LGBTQ+) individuals; their families and communities; their cultures and subcultures; their histories; institutions; languages; and literatures; their economics and politics; modes of representation; and their complex relations to the culture and experience of a heterosexual majority.
Our program facilitates students' interactions with faculty members across the university that are working on and studying LGBTQ related topics in a variety of disciplines.
LGBTQ Studies Minor Highlights
Every fall and spring semester the WGST Program coordinates with the Pride Alliance
to host Lavender graduation where we honor graduates who identify as members of the
LGBTQIA Community. Last fall we celebrated 23 graduates, and in the spring we celebrated
35 graduates.
The Program was excited to award the Marilyn Morris Award for Outstanding Academic
Contributions to LGBTQ Studies to History professor, Dr. Clark Pomerleau. Dr. Pomerleau’s impact to LGBTQ studies at UNT, as well as his mentorship and support
for LGBTQ students and colleagues has been exceptional in every way and has had a
reverberating impact on the culture and curriculum at UNT.
Director Megan Morrissey published an article in 2022 titled, “When Everything Changes, Everything Stays the Same: The Queer Paradox of Quarantine
Pods" in Women’s Studies in Communication, Special Issue: Collective Rage: Unpacking the Constraints,
Privilege, and Roles of Academic Mothers during a Global Pandemic.
Twenty students are currently pursuing an LGBTQ Studies Minor.
LGBTQ Studies Minor Courses You Could Take
LGBTQ Studies (3 hrs)
Introduction to LGBTQ Studies, an interdisciplinary field that raises questions about
the meanings of sex, gender and sexuality in society.
Lesbian, Gay and Queer Film and Video (3 hrs)
Examines the representation of lesbian, gay and queer characters and concerns throughout
the history of American film.
Queer Theory (3 hrs)
Survey of key historical and contemporary theoretical debates that have shaped the
interdisciplinary field of queer studies with an emphasis on LGBTQ+ issues, identities,
and activisms.
LGBT Politics (3 hrs)
Explores the development and the political implications of the LGBTQ rights movement
in the United States, with a goal toward understanding the role of this movement in
pluralistic, contemporary political life.
Gay/Lesbian Plays and Performance After 1960s (3 hrs)
Survey of gay and lesbian plays and performance after 1960s to the present day, focusing
on themes and issues of identity and representation. Course geared toward those interested
in both production and criticism.
Feminist and Womanist Theories (3 hrs)
Historical overview, key concepts, and vocabulary of feminist/womanist theories in
social and political contexts. Current and emerging bodies of feminist/womanist theories
are used to define critical contemporary issues and debates, and to initiate discussion
on wide-ranging social, political and global issues from a variety of feminist and
gender perspectives.
