Uncover the inner workings of the world on an atomic level and explore the properties and behavior of matter through experiential learning.
The undergraduate chemistry program at the University of North Texas strives to provide its students with a quality education in the fundamental areas of chemical knowledge and hands-on training using modern chemical instrumentation. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry qualifies you to be a professional chemist or to earn a certificate in forensic science. The UNT forensic science program is one of only two undergraduate programs in Texas and one of only 38 programs nationwide. The BSCHM is a good choice for students planning to pursue graduate study in chemistry. The Bachelor of Arts with a major in chemistry prepares students for careers in chemistry-related areas like business, professional health services, environmental studies, patent law, and pharmacology. You may also get a teaching certification that equips you for teaching in secondary schools.

Why Earn a Chemistry Degree?

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree is certified by the American Chemical Society, and is designed primarily for students planning to pursue advanced graduate studies or to seek employment in private industry or in a government laboratory.

The B.A. in Chemistry is available for students who desire a degree in chemistry with a more liberal arts orientation. Students can select from three coursework options that best suit their career goals:

  • students planning to attend graduate school;
  • students planning a career in chemical industry; or
  • students who are pre-professional Allied Health majors

Undergraduate students who wish to teach in the public school system can pursue a BA in Chemistry with Teaching Certificate.

The undergraduate chemistry programs at the University of North Texas provide many opportunities beyond formal classroom instruction. Students can perform independent research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Many of our undergraduate students have co-authored research publications resulting from their undergraduate research, and many have gone on to graduate studies at top research universities.

Marketable Skills
  • Operation of modern spectrometric instrumentation
  • Operation of modern chromatographic instrumentation
  • Application of appropriate statistical methods
  • Safe handling of stable compounds
  • Laboratory notebook keeping

Chemistry Degree Highlights

Many opportunities are available for our students to participate in undergraduate research. This helps you prepare for graduate school, gain experience for an internship, or publish in a scientific journal.
The Chemistry Resource Center and the Computational Chemistry Instructional Laboratory provide mentoring and tutoring services to Chemistry majors. You can also participate in the student chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma, a professional chemistry fraternity, or the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society.
Our faculty members include professors who have achieved national and international recognition for their scholarship. Their research spans the traditional areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as interdisciplinary fields like chemical biology, materials chemistry, and chemistry education.
The forensic science program is one of only 38 programs nationwide certified by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Our computational chemistry research group is one of the most recognized in the nation.
The Chemistry program is recognized for its excellence in education, earning accreditation from the American Chemical Society. This distinction means we meet or exceed high standards for excellence in education.

What Can You do With a Degree in Chemistry?

Chemists work for:

  • Chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturers
  • Electronics and scientific instrument manufacturers
  • Food, cosmetics, and personal care companies
  • Government agencies
  • National and private laboratories
  • Research firms
A degree in Chemistry prepares students for careers in chemistry-related areas like business, professional health services, environmental studies and pharmacology. You may also get a teaching certification that equips you for teaching in secondary schools.

Our chemistry alumni include a former president of Dow Corning Corp.-Europe, a former head patent attorney for Eli Lilly and Co., two past presidents of the American College of Surgeons, and many other outstanding researchers and university professors.

Recent graduates have been highly sought after for industrial and government positions, and many have attended some of the country’s top graduate and medical schools.

Chemistry Degree Courses You Could Take

Instrumental Analysis (3 hrs)
Principles and theory of chemical analysis utilizing absorption spectroscopy in ultraviolet, visible and infrared regions, nuclear and electron spin resonance, mass spectrometry, chromatography, polarography and other advanced instrumental techniques.
