Why Earn a degree in Biomedical Engineering?

UNT's bachelor of science in Biomedical Engineering prepares you for engineering careers that solve societal problems, advance technology and improve the quality of life for people everywhere.

Biomedical engineers often:

  • Conduct research.
  • Design systems and products.
  • Evaluate the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of biomedical equipment.
  • Install, adjust, maintain, repair or provide technical support for biomedical equipment.
  • Train clinicians and other personnel on the proper use of equipment.
  • Work with life scientists, chemists and medical scientists to research the applications of engineering to biological systems of humans and animals.

This interdisciplinary degree program gives you the flexibility to explore various facets of engineering, the life sciences and medicine. You can concentrate your studies on:

  • Biocomputing
  • Biomaterials
  • Biomechanics
  • Biomedical instrumentation
  • Biotechnology (pre-medical track)
  • Business

In addition to your concentration area, you will have the option to obtain a minor in Math with an option to get a second minor in an engineering discipline or Computer Science, Biology or Business. The second minor is determined through a careful selection of electives based on your chosen track. It can be completed within the minimum number of credit hours required to earn your degree and will allow you to become a well-rounded engineer.

Marketable Skills
  • Medical device design and validation
  • Problem identification and troubleshooting
  • Project management
  • FDA procedures-quality control
  • Team Management

Biomedical Engineering Degree Highlights

Our Living Learning Community brings together engineering students who live on campus to enhance academic and social experiences.
You’ll learn from faculty members who are world-renowned experts in the field, and you’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate on research projects with faculty members at the UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth.
A capstone project, which is completed in a two-semester sequence just before graduation, tests the skills and knowledge you’ve gained while pursuing your degree.
The department also offers the accelerated Grad Track program that enables you to take graduate-level courses during your senior year, thus opening up the possibility of earning your B.S. and M.S. degrees in as few as five years.
The College of Engineering, in partnership with the Learning Center, also offers a peer tutoring program for personal assistance with coursework.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is located in Discovery Park, a 300-acre research facility that combines state-of-the-art labs, equipment, offices and classrooms to maximize the potential for creativity, collaboration and technology innovation.

What Can You Do With A Degree in Biomedical Engineering?

The U.S. Department of Labor expects biomedical engineering to grow at an above-average rate and become the fastest-growing engineering field over the next decade. According to labor department data, biomedical engineering jobs will experience growth rates of more than 60 percent in coming years.

Biomedical Engineering Degree Courses You Could Take

Software for Biomedical Engineers (4 hrs)
Introduction and exposure to common programming languages used in biomedical engineering practice; develop functions and algorithms for analysis of data; develop basic data acquisition functions.
Biomaterials (3 hrs)
Introduction to the properties of natural and man-made materials commonly encountered in biomedicine and biomedical engineering; the basics of material structures, including crystalline and chemical structure, and microstructure; and characteristics of the materials are developed from the microscopic origins.
Biomedical Modeling (3 hrs)
Introduction to equations and numerical analysis techniques important to the description of living systems and medical devices; solution alternatives and limitations; compartmental modeling; use of finite element modeling; mathematical models of physiological control systems and devices; the behavior or physiological control systems using both time and frequency domain methods.
Biomedical Transport Phenomena (3 hrs)
Quantitative analysis of transport phenomena in physiological systems. Introduction to bio-fluid mechanics, mass and heat transfer across biological systems. Topics covered include fluid statics, mass, heat and momentum conservation, laminar and turbulent flow, microscale and macroscale analytical methods, mass transport with biochemical reactions, applications to transport in tissue and organs.
Engineering Measurements from Human Systems (3 hrs)
Introduction to an understanding of mammalian physiology and the engineering aspects of different physiological systems. Focuses on a number of organ systems that may include cardiovascular, respiratory and renal. The gross anatomical features of the body systems are presented together with the relevant developmental, histological, functional and clinical facts.
Discover Biomedical Engineering (3 hrs)
Focuses on describing, explaining and predicting natural phenomena. Students will learn about human anatomy and physiology and thus be able to describe and explain natural phenomena that occur in the human body. Students will learn about various systems in the body and how function can be enhanced while improving quality of life.
