What Earn a Bilingual Education Degree?

The rapid expansion of Dual Language programs in Texas offers a unique opportunity to work with emergent bi/multilingual students and their families in this high-needs area. This is a job that is constantly in demand and also offers pay supplements and tuition supports from districts.

The Bachelor of Science in Education with Bilingual Education certification builds theoretical and historical perspectives on the unique contexts of Bilingual, dual- and multi-language learners. Through inquiry-based approaches embedded in area schools and communities, future teachers develop informed, culturally-responsive instructional practices that positively impact learners and families.

Many courses are taught in Spanish or Spanish and English. Topics include:

Latina/o/x Children’s and Young Adult Literature for the Elementary Multilingual Classroom (3 hrs)
The integration of children’s picture books and Young Adult (YA) literature that has succinct connections to the histories and lived experiences of Latina/o/x youth is an important curricular component that provides both context and platforms for the elementary multilingual classroom.
Teaching English as an Additional Language (3 hrs)
Focuses on the methods and techniques of teaching English as an additional language and assessing emergent bilinguals in elementary and secondary schools.
Biliteracy in Bilingual Classrooms (3 hrs)
Explores theories, approaches and techniques related to literacy and biliteracy development for multicultural and multilingual children. Emphasizes classroom environments that promote additive bilingualism.
Dual Language Bilingual EducationPrograms, Policy and Practice (3 hrs)
Examines the rich and complex historical perspectives, inequities at the levels of policy and practice, and types of programs in multilingual education. Specific attention will be placed upon Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) programs due to their rapid growth at the local, state, and national levels, promising academic achievement results, and culturally sustaining pedagogies that are being integrated into these programs.
Teaching and Learning in the Bilingual Classroom (3 hrs)
Examines research-based strategies, methods, and materials to teach the different content areas in the bilingual classroom. Special attention is given to the affective, linguistic and academic needs of bilingual students in grades Pre-K through 5.
