Art Education Master's Highlights
Students get the opportunity to collaborate with the Onstead Institute, one of six
regional centers known for excellence in visual arts education.
UNT offers unique opportunities to collaborate with the African American Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Crow Museum of Asian
Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum, Meadows Museum, Modern Art Museum of
Fort Worth and the Greater Denton Arts Council.
The Art Education master’s program at UNT has a proven record of success by producing
nearly half of the state's university-certified art educators.
The UNT Art Gallery offers 2,500 square feet of exhibition space with a permanent
collection of 182 works and a lending collection of 974 works.
State-of-the-art facilities include: the Visual Resources Collection with 65,000 digital
images and more than 1,000 films; computer labs with new technology and cutting-edge
hardware and software; and 150,000 square feet of specialized classrooms, studios
and galleries.
The North Texas region offers rich museum resources, bolstered by UNT's experienced
and dedicated faculty, established and new partnerships, innovative technology and
unique educator training opportunities.
Career Outlook
The Art Education master’s program at UNT has a proven record of success by producing nearly half of the state's university-certified art educators. Our certification track prepares you to work as an art teacher at elementary-, middle- or high-school levels as well as for careers in community art programs and other educational facilities.
Our graduates from the Museum Education and the Graduate Art Museum Certificate programs intern in regional museums and go on to careers as art museum professionals.
K-12 certified teachers and professionals from arts-related fields can enhance their existing practices to become arts leaders through advanced coursework and/or can expand their career options iwhtin arts institutions.

Aesthetic Inquiry with Urban Youth and Communities (3 hrs)
Explores ways of dialoguing with art that adapt to various educational sites and programs.
Contemporary Trends in Art Education (3 hrs)
Examines the relation between theory and practice in art education through analysis
of topics currently affecting the field.
Critical Art Education (3 hrs)
Introduction to theoretical frameworks and current research in critical art education,
with particular emphasis on social inequality and change.
Curriculum Theory in Art Education (3 hrs)
Introduces frameworks and structures for creating an art curriculum. Includes methodologies
for the assessment of educational programs and student learning in art for multiple
sites of practice.
Introduction to Research in Art Education (3 hrs)
Study of research techniques and their applications in the field of art education.
Communities, Schools and Museums (3 hrs)
Introduction to community, school and museum partnerships and pedagogies; includes
site visits to city museums and guest lectures from museum professionals, school teachers
and community groups engaged in building relationships and empowering learners across
institutions.
