Early Admission

On an individual basis, UNT may admit high school students to the freshman class after completion of the junior year of high school. To be considered, students must:

  1. be ranked in the top quarter of their class;
  2. have a strong B average;
  3. have completed 3 units each of solid English, mathematics, social science and natural science;
  4. present minimum combined SAT (combined critical reading/verbal + math) score of 1180 or ACT composite of 26;
  5. submit letters from high school counselor or principal recommending early admission;
  6. submit a letter from parents or guardians stating they approve of early admission; and
  7. arrange an interview in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Under this program, high school seniors may be enrolled concurrently at UNT through coordination with the UNT Director of Admissions and the high school.

Early College High School (ECHS)

We understand that as an ECHS graduate, you are not the same as most incoming freshmen, so it makes sense that your admissions process should be a little different too. We take your college experience into account during our review process.

Incoming students need:

  • A minimum SAT score of 950 or ACT score of 20, depending on your graduation class rank
  • A high school transcript showing your credits and graduation class rank
  • Completed the Texas Higher Education Assessment (formerly TASP) or the ASSET, COMPASS or ACCUPLACER tests
  • ECHS students also need a community college transcript showing your course work credits

Homeschooled Students

UNT recognizes homeschool programs and works with homeschooled students in their admission to the university. UNT serves homeschooled students through the early admissions program. Since a homeschool does not have a counselor or principal, the parent letter should address both the parent’s permission as well as information about academic progress, success and individual motivation to succeed in a college environment.

Homeschooled students should follow the steps of the freshman application process and submit their online application as well as official homeschool transcript. SAT and ACT scores are encouraged but optional. Homeschooled students admitted early to UNT must have a senior standing and are eligible to take any UNT classes where they meet course requirements or prerequisites.

In addition, homeschooled students must take the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) assessment prior to registering for courses. The TSI Assessment cannot be used in admissions decisions at UNT but is necessary for adequate preregistration advising. For more information on the TSI Assessment, please visit General Advising or call 940-565-3633.

Individual Review of Application

Individual Review is an automatic process that allows UNT Admissions to review the application of any student who does not meet minimum admission requirements. If you are eligible for Individual Review, an email will be sent to you with information on required documentation and how to upload the documents to your myUNT portal.

Factors that may help determine academic readiness under the individual review provision may include, but are not limited to: school attended, courses taken, employment experience, special abilities, individual achievements, leadership activities, public service and extra-curricular activities.
